“Carter's mission to rescue the hostages goes down in flames… For Carter in particular, and for the U.S. in general, the desert debacle was a military, diplomatic and political fiasco. A once dominant military machine, first humbled in its agonizing standoff in Viet Nam, now looked incapable of keeping its aircraft aloft even when no enemy knew they were there, and even incapable of keeping them from crashing into each other despite four months of practice for their mission,” Bahadori Jahromi cited a Time Magazine report of May 5, 1980 in a memo to IRNA.
“The sands were agents for God”, the spokesman referred to a notion used by the late Imam Khomeini about the US Army’s Operation Eagle Claw.
The occult assistance, as phrased by Imam Khomeini, is an undeniable reality happened times and again during the history of Islam, he noted, adding that whenever the Islamic society has stuck in a tangle, the divine assistance has come from somewhere nobody would imagine.
Bahadori Jahromi mentioned the Operation Eagle Claw, also known as Operation Tabas, where the US Armed Forces, at the order of the then US President Jimmy Carter, unsuccessfully attempted to rescue 52 embassy staff held captive at the Embassy of the US in Tehran on 24 April 1980.
This was the fiasco that led to Carter’s failure to be reelected, he underlined, adding that such events, where God helps people to advance their affairs, is what God has promised, as He has said in the Holy Quran “when thou threwest, it was not thy act, but Allah's” (8:17).
The spokesman highlighted the faith of the Iranian people and God’s protection of the Islamic society as being among the most important reasons of US’ failure and its miscalculation.
The eight-year Iran- Iraq war was replete with signs that God has changed an absolute failure to a certain victory of the Iranian nation, he noted, taking the recent US sanctions as an example.
The Americans announced repeatedly that the Iranian society will collapse from inside as a result of unprecedented sanctions, Bahadori Jahromi continued, but the sanctions led to a situation where even the Western countries admit US's failure.
He cited US State Department spokesman Ned Price as saying that the maximum pressure campaign against the Iranian nation was an “abject failure”.
