Muharram and Ashura

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, when Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (as), the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (saw) and the third Imam and leader of the Shi'a. Imam Hussein's (as) martyrdom is a sad day for all Muslims especially the Shi'a, who mourn the massacre of their "Master of Martyrs" and his family in Karbala in 61AH/680CE.

The leader of the Iranian revolution issued a statement, which showed his opposition to the Capitulation Bill in 1964. This statement lead to the removal and nullification of this bill . Excerpts of this message is as follows: Now the American military and non-military advisers, their families and their servants are free to commit any crime and the Iranian police do not have the right to arrest them. The Iranian courts are not qualified to judge over them; Why? Because America is the country of dollars and Iran needs those dollars! According to this shameful enactment, if an American adviser or the servant of an American adviser insults or offends against one of the maraji` at-taqlid of Iran, one of the esteemed people, one of the high-ranking officers, the police are not allowed to arrest him; the courts are not allowed to judge him. But if their dogs are offended, the police have to interfere and the court should investigate!

Eid al-Ghadeer is a day which many Shi’as all over the world celebrate. It is the day when Amir al-Mu’mineen was named the successor of the Prophet (saw). The Prophet (saw) talks of two weighty things, the Qur’an and the household of the Prophet (saw), which Muslims must cling on to in order to stay on the true path of Islam. Unfortunately this sermon is overlooked by many Sunni Muslims.

Dr. Hamid Ansari, who is the deputy head of the Institute of Compilation and Publication of Imam Khomeini’s works, sent a letter, which was made public, to the head of the Supreme Leader’s representatives in universities. This letter was in regards to the publication of false issues and statements regarding Sayyid Hassan Khomeini and officials, who were trusted by Imam Khomeini and are now trusted by his grandson. The letter also complains about the illegal publication of the Imam’s works without the permission of the Institute of Compilation and Publication of Imam Khomeini’s works.

In an interview with Ayatollah Taskhiri, chairman of the International Forum for Proximity of Islamic Denominations, the hajj messages issued by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution were discussed. Due to the long day Iranian pilgrims had to endure on their way to Saudi Arabia, certain negotiations took place between the officials of the two countries in order to coordinate the times and delays. Ayatollah Taskhiri was a member of the Iranian delegation which was sent to Saudi Arabia to negotiate with Saudi officials.

The Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei issued a statement to the Hajj congress and pilgrims. In this statement Ayatollah Khamenei talked of the recent movements and uprisings in the Arab World and stated that these uprisings were due to the Islamic awakening of different societies. Furthermore he added that in order for these uprisings to be successful, people must be resolute and must not be fooled by the deceit or trickery used by some powerful countries to break up their unity. Without unity and persistence no uprising can achieve anything.
